UPD Geol 1/ Geol 11 Earthquake Readings

[Please click to see hi-res zoomed in version]
This chapter is all about earthquakes. An earthquake is the vibration of the earth made by the rapid release of energy. The force radiates from its source, the focus, in the form of waves. Other concepts included are earthquakes and faults, discovering the cause of earthquakes, foreshocks and aftershocks, magnitude scales, damages from earthquakes, probing the earth's interior.

Foreshocks usually precede major earthquakes by days, or sometimes years. Aftershocks are adjustments that follow a major earthquake and are smaller earthquakes.

Seismology is the study of earthquake waves. Modern seismographs are instruments that record earthquake waves. The records are called seismograms. Waves that travel along the Earth's outer layer are called surface waves. Those that travel through the earth's interios are called body waves. Body waves are divided into primary waves and secondary waves.

Vocabularies: aftershock, body wave, core, crust, earthquake, elastic rebound, epicenter, fault, fault creep, focus, foreshock, inner core, intensity, liquefaction, lithosphere, lower mantle, magnitude, mantle, modified mercalli intensity scale, mohorovicic discontinuity, moment magnitude, outer core, primary wave, richter's scale, secondary wave, seismic sea wave, seismogram, seismograph, seismology, surface wave.
